When studying for any class, it is important to understand the easiest way that your brain retains information. Finding your best study method depends on what type of learner you are. The types of learners fit into four categories: visual, auditory kinesthetic, and reading/writing. Each type of learner has its own characteristics and its own study strategies. Knowing which area you fall into is the first step in academic success!

Primarily, visual learners prefer to see information represented in the forms of graphs, maps, charts, maps, or diagrams. These learners understand topics better when they can relate the data to an image. If you identify most with a visual learner, you should take detailed notes and add small commentaries to texts as you read them. In your notes, you should differentiate the information using a color coding system or drawing concept maps.

Auditory learners understand best when they hear or speak the information. In a class room, these learners benefit the most from discussion, lectures, or any activity which challenges them to share their ideas. The most important educational element for auditory learners is classroom attendance. These learners study the best by reading their notes aloud, converting unspoken data to spoken description, utilizing podcasts, or creating songs, jingles, or mnemonic devices to relate the information in an amusing way.

If you are a kinesthetic learner, you thrive with hands on activity. These learners understand a concept better when they can physically connect to the information. While experiments similar to science labs are ideal for these learners, it is not easy to turn every subject into a hands on affair. Nevertheless, there are multiple techniques that prove useful for a kinesthetic learner while studying: Use hand gestures while studying to help you recall material. Build physical models when applicable. Keep your hands busy during class by taking notes. Also, you can make your notes interactive by using sticky notes and other pieces of paper– just stay creative!

Our final classification of learners is the reader/writer. Not surprisingly, these learners prefer to see the information expressed in words. If you are a reader/writer, you find the most satisfaction in obtaining information from written sources such as notes, books, or internet articles. Most likely, you retain the information by writing a summary. Studying as a reader/ writer means re-writing your notes to reinstate the data in your brain. Additionally, reading additional information on a topic and making lists helps the reader/writer to learn.

Ultimately, realizing what type of learner you are is imperative to your study strategy. If you are still unsure of your group, you can take an online test to determine which path is best for you. Remember that these suggestions are generalizations made for four categories of people. However, not everyone is the same. Everyone has study preferences, and these classifications are set to make suggestions to improve your productivity academically.
